The stories

Eleven short stories

Each story starts with "In short." Read only that line to get the idea, or follow the steps for the detail.

Story 1Store owner

Setting up the store

In short

The owner opens a ready-made produce store on Nipige, adds their name and logo, says when and where they deliver, and invites farms.

  1. Nipige

Creates Green Valley's store from the Fresh Produce template. It comes with ready products (carrots, kale, apples…), categories and sample boxes.

  2. Owner

Adds the logo, colors and website address. The web store and phone app now look like Green Valley.

  3. Owner

Connects a bank account to receive card payments, and turns on automatic sales tax.

  4. Owner

Sets the delivery day (Wednesday), the ZIP codes they deliver to, the delivery fee ($5.99), pickup spots, and the cutoff (Sunday 8 PM).

  5. Owner

Removes products their area doesn't grow, and sets each product's price and photo.

  6. Owner

Creates the boxes customers can subscribe to (more in story 5).

  7. Owner

Invites farms by email or text.

Story 2FarmOwner

A farm joins and lists its food

In short

Sunny Acres joins, picks the products it grows from the store's list, and every week says how many it can sell.

  1. Sunny Acres

Opens the invite and creates an account: farm story, photos, growing practices, organic certificate, bank account for payments.

  2. Owner

Checks the profile and certificate, then approves. Sunny Acres now has its own page in the store.

  3. Sunny Acres

Types "carrots." The app shows the store's existing "Carrots, 1 lb bunch." Sunny taps it, so Sunny can now sell carrots. No duplicate product is created.

  4. Sunny Acres

Grows something the store doesn't sell, like purple carrots? Taps "Suggest new product." The owner approves it, and then any farm can sell it.

  5. Sunny AcresEvery Thursday

Posts next week's offerA farm's promise for next week: how many it can supply and the price it wants. Example: "150 carrots at $2.25 each.": "Carrots: 150 bunches, $2.25 each." One tap on "Copy last week" makes this quick.

Sunny Acres Β· Next week (Wed, Oct 7)
    Carrots, 1 lb150 Β· $2.25
    Lacinato kale120 Β· $2.50
    Sweet potatoes90 Β· $3.25
    Copy last week
  6. OwnerThursday evening

Checks there's enough of everything, and approves. On Friday, the products appear in the store.

Story 3Customer

The same carrots from 3 farms: what the customer sees

In short

Carrots appear once in the store, with "from 3 local farms." The store picks the farm, or the customer can choose their favorite.

What happens behind the scenes

Sunny Acres offers 150, River Bend 100, Hilltop 50.

Three farms, one product: "Carrots, 1 lb bunch."

What the customer sees

πŸ₯• Carrots Β· 1 lb bunch
$3.00 Β· from 3 local farms
Best available (we pick)
Sunny Acres Β· 12 mi
River Bend Organics Β· 18 mi
Hilltop Orchard Β· 25 mi
  1. In the shop and in search, there is one carrot card, not three.

  2. Most customers leave "We pick." After the cutoff, the store shares the orders fairly between the farms based on how much each offered.

  3. A customer who loves River Bend chooses it, and their carrots come from River Bend.

  4. If Sunny sells out, the card simply says "from 2 local farms." If all three sell out, it says "Sold out this week."

  5. The receipt shows which farm each item actually came from.

When is it the "same" item? Only when a customer would happily take either. Organic and non-organic carrots are two products. So are a 1 lb bunch and a 5 lb bag.
Story 4DevHub

Buying one item: 1 kg of tomatoes

In short

Dev orders about 1 kg (2.2 lb) of tomatoes. He's charged for the exact weight after the hub weighs his bag.

  1. DevThursday

Adds "Heirloom tomatoes, $3.00 per lb," 2.2 lb. The app says: "About $6.60. You'll pay for the exact weight."

  2. SystemAt checkout

Puts a temporary holdMoney reserved on the card but not taken yet, like a hotel deposit. It disappears when the final price is charged. of about $7.59 on his card, a little more than the estimate, in case the bag is heavier.

  3. SystemSun 8 PM

Cutoff. Dev's tomatoes are added to everyone else's tomato orders.

  4. FarmsTuesday

Bring big crates of tomatoes to the hub.

  5. Hub staffTuesday

Weigh Dev's bag: 2.31 lb. The label shows his name and the weight.

  6. MariaWednesday

    Delivers it.

  7. SystemWednesday night

Charges the exact $6.93 (2.31 Γ— $3.00) and releases the rest of the hold.

    Green Valley Β· ReceiptHeirloom tomatoes: estimated $6.60 β†’ final $6.93 (2.31 lb)
Items sold by count, like "3 peppers," have a fixed price at checkout, with no weighing. Ordered after the cutoff? It goes to the next week, and the app says so before Dev pays.

  6. HubTuesday

  7. MariaWednesday

Delivers it. Jamie also gets recipes that use what's in her box.

The other box types, in one line each

Fixed box→Friday: see what's coming. Can add extras or skip, but not swap. Packed fastest, since all boxes are the same.
Empty box→Reminder: "Fill your box by Sunday 8 PM." If not filled, the owner's rule applies: skip that week (default), or send the same items as last time.
Every 2 or 4 weeks→Same steps, but only in the customer's weeks. Off weeks: no box, no charge.
Story 7FarmsHubDriver

From farm to hub to your door

In short

Farms get a harvest list on Monday and bring the food to the hub on Tuesday. The hub packs each order and the driver delivers on Wednesday.

  1. SystemSun 8 PM

Adds up all orders and shares them between the farms. Carrots: 200 needed, so Sunny Acres 100, River Bend 67, Hilltop 33, in proportion to what each offered.

  2. FarmsMonday 9 AM

Each farm gets its harvest list: totals only, no customer names.

Green Valley β†’ Sunny AcresPlease bring 100 carrots and 60 kale to the hub, Tue 10 AM–2 PM.
  3. FarmsTuesday

Harvest, put food in crates with printed labels, and drive to the hub. A farm without a van taps "Please collect," and the hub's van picks it up.

  4. Hub staffTuesday

Check in: scan each crate and count. River Bend brought 50 kale instead of 60? The app swaps in another farm's spare kale or a similar green for the affected boxes, and texts those customers.

  5. Hub staffTuesday

Pack: each order gets a printed list and a label with the customer's name and stop number. Boxes are kept cold overnight.

  6. MariaWednesday

Opens the driver app and checks the cooler is cold. She follows the route in order.

Green ValleyMaria is 3 stops away 🚚
  7. Maria

At Jamie's door: types Jamie's 4-digit code, or leaves the box with a photo. Not home and no safe spot? She marks it and brings it back.

Green ValleyDelivered! πŸ“Έ [photo of the box at your door]
  8. Pickup spots

Boxes for pickup spots are dropped there. The host ticks names off on a simple web page as people collect.

Story 8LisaSunny Acres

Then, Lisa's story

  1. LisaWednesday

If Lisa doesn't come

30 min after her slot→Text: "Your order is waiting at Sunny Acres until 12 PM."
At closing time→Marked "Not collected." The farm sees a list of who didn't come.
After the hold time→The farm's rule applies: held until Sunday noon, then donated (no refund). The farm can also offer a new slot.
Keeps missing pickups→The farm or owner can turn off farm pickup for that customer.

Good to know

Cart has food from other farms too→The app asks Lisa to choose: pick up only Sunny's items, or switch to hub delivery for everything.
Weekly pickupβ†’Lisa can subscribe: "Every Saturday, 10–11 AM at Sunny Acres." Same weekly steps, with Thursday 8 PM as the cutoff.
Bad weather→The farm closes the date. Everyone is texted and can pick a new date or get a refund.
Payment→No delivery fee. In a marketplace, the farm is paid its sales minus the owner's share.
Story 9CustomerOwner

When something goes wrong

In short

Most problems are fixed automatically with a swap or store credit, and the customer is told before delivery.

A farm brings less than promised→Another farm's spare stock or a similar item fills the gap. If neither works, the customer gets credit. They're texted before delivery.
The food arrives damaged→Within 48 hours: My orders → Report a problem → photo → credit (instant) or refund.
Card payment fails→Tried again twice on Monday. The customer gets a link to fix it. Still unpaid by Tuesday morning? The box is cancelled for that week.
Customer not at home→Left at the door with a photo if allowed. Otherwise brought back, and the customer is told what's next.
Driver is sick→The owner gives the route to another driver.
A farm's food is poor quality→The hub rejects it with a photo. The farm sees why and isn't paid for those items.
Story 10OwnerFarms

How everyone gets paid

In short

The customer pays the store. The store pays each farm every Friday for what it delivered. Nipige charges the store a flat monthly fee, not a cut of each order.

Jamie's $50.99 order, split up

🌾 Farms: about $27

Each farm gets its price for what it supplied, paid Friday.

🚚 Driver: tip + route pay

The tip goes 100% to the driver.

πŸ’³ Card fee: about $1.80

Kept by the payment company.

🏠 Store: the rest

Covers packing, boxes, rent, staff and profit.

🧩 Nipige: $0 from this order

Earns a monthly subscription from the store instead.

  1. During the week, the system records what each farm actually supplied: food accepted at the hub, farm pickups collected, and the farm's own deliveries.

  2. It calculates each farm's money, minus any items rejected or refunded.

  3. The owner checks it, or lets it run automatically.

  4. Friday: the money goes to each farm's bank, with a statement.

Green Valley β†’ Sunny AcresPayout sent: $411.75 for Oct 7 deliveries. View statement.
Story 11Hilltop Orchard

A single farm with its own store

In short

Same app, simpler. There's one farm, so there's no hub, no sharing between farms and no farm choice. The farm does everything itself.

Products→Hilltop adds its own products and prices. No approval needed.
Each week→Updates how many it has ("120 bags of apples"). Items at zero hide automatically.
Boxes and subscriptions→Exactly the same as stories 5 and 6.
After the cutoff→One harvest and packing list. Hilltop packs in its own shed. No hub.
Getting food to customers→Pick up at the farm (story 8), its own driver using the same driver app, or a farmers market booth.
Money→Keeps all sales except card fees. Pays Nipige a smaller monthly plan.
